"In Search of" by Stacy Rodrigues

In the hustle and bustle of our day to day lives, we rarely find the time to look
within ourselves, in order to explore our capabilities and understand what we
really want to do in life- here, my disability gave me the opportunity to do so.
The nature of always seeking for positive in all negative happenings and the
desire of trying to do something out of the box, enabled to bring the best out
of me… even though it was difficult to follow this path.

The creative world always attracted me from the beginning. I desired to be a
part of it being invisible yet staying connected with the whole world- the best
way to do so was to be a writer and a journalist that allowed me to meet
people, know their story and be able to narrate it in my own words was
something that thrilled me. Unfortunately, being visually impaired I could not
perceive my education in what I desired to be and was forced to take up music
as I was advised to perceive my career in a field where I did not have to use the little vision I had.

The restrictions never held me back, with passing time, technology helped.
Audio books that were available online helped me listen to stories, the
software called Jaws on the other hand helped me write down my thoughts
into poems. This progress in life gave me the confidence that someday I will be able to reach out being a writer even though in the past my impairment had restricted me.

The desire to have my own identity by doing something different and creative
pushed me to keep trying. I kept on exploring my capabilities. I failed many
times, faced rejections in all that I tried to do, but I never gave up. As I trekked
this path, one of the most beautiful thing happened in my life- I discovered
that I could paint at 25. This discovery brought to me my identity. I was known as an artist, but the desire to be a writer still kept me on guard.
Once the chase of finding my own identity in society ended, it felt like it was
time to tell a story. Having different stories in mind with a lot of ideas, I had no clue from where to begin. At one point, I started working on two stories at a time and was confused. Just in time 'Princess India' a beauty contest for
visually impaired girls happened and after the selection round I knew which
story I should continue with and how I had to bring it all together.
The thought of working on a story of a challenged character cleared the whole
confusion. What kind of difficulties does a visually impaired person go through was something I felt the world needs to know. This thought enabled me to allow the hero of the story to have the same disease as me as well as the profession- a person with no self-pity and a great fighting spirit. The rest of the build-up are inspirations from true incidents of different people and to add flavour and mend it together a little of fiction.

Today, I am content with all that I have achieved- I am an Artist who has put up 3 solo exhibitions and has been a part of a few group exhibitions. I am a poet with my poem book called 'Reflections' has a collection of few of my poems. I am a full time yoga instructor as well as a spiritual counsellor and now, finally after 5 long years an Author with my first book 'In Search Of…'
It is a story of a visually impaired individual. Her desire to be accepted and to
be heard puts her through different experiences of life. A story of hope, love,
rejection, courage, friendship and faith. How life tutors her through all her
experiences, what she learns and how she finds her true self is the story of 'In
Search Of…'

"SHAKUNI - AN OATH FOR REVENGE" By Gopal Jain

Mahabharat is such a great saga, such a great book that has all the essence of life, present in it. This has love, hate, conspiracy, friendship, hatred, loyalty, treachery and all other such emotions. Before the great war of Mahabhrat, the great continent of India was full of brave hearts and warriors, but after the war was over, only a few warriors survived in this land. This war of Mahabharat was the result of two pledges; one that was taken by Pitamah Bhisma and the other pledge that was taken by the ruler of Gandhar, Shakuni. If Bhisma Pitamah had not taken the pledge that he would not sit on the throne, there would have been no chance that this war would have happened and if Shakuni had not taken the pledge that he would destroy the Kuru dynasty, then he would have never left Gandhar and come to Hastinapur; this would ensure that the seed of enmity between the Kauravas and Pandavas would have never grown. The situational pledges that were taken by Bhisma and Shakuni, later on turned into a curse for them. The almighty created such a situation, that both of them started regretting their decisions of taking such pledges. Shakuni never knew that, the sister he loved more that his life would one day be married to the same kuru dynasty, whose destruction has been pledged by him. I have tried to enlighten many unknown facts about the life of Shakuni so that the readers could know more and more about Shakuni.

This is my first composition and I would like to dedicate this to, not only my late heavenly mother but all other mothers too. Since father, brother and other such relations can be formed again, but the selfless love of a mother, once lost can never be found again. The pain of losing one’s mother in childhood and not finding mother like love again, stay with you forever like emptiness. Maybe this pain encourages me to hold the pen and start writing.

“Heroine Of The Novel” By Gopi Nath

I started writing this novel, using simple descriptions, in early 2018 and finished it by December. This novel is about a software engineer who thinks his job is just mechanical and hardly requires dynamic intelligence. He wishes to be a novelist. From a mechanical world, he migrates to an emotional one and faces difficulties in managing both worlds. The novel he is writing is about a young girl. He finishes his novel but coincidentally loses his job and moves to another city to search for a fresh job. There, he discovers a girl whose face, especially her eyes, exactly matches that of a fictitious character – the heroine of his novel. He considers this coincidental event a gift from Heaven, and she becomes his inspiration.
Gopi Nath is from Kolkata. A software engineer by profession, but imaginative by nature, he loves to write fiction novels. He likes instrumental music, watches art films as well as criticizes them. He thought himself capable of writing attractive stories sprinkled with philosophy and started writing books in 2016. The publication of his first novel was put on hold as it was different from the ongoing trend. Then, he started his next one, “Heroine of the Novel” having simple, rhythmic descriptions, complete with a dreamy finish.
He loves to write fictitious stories, adding flavors of anger, sorrow, joy, comedy, and fear with filmic vision, full of contradictions, with philosophy woven underneath. Just as well, he leaves a message for the nation inside his works.

“History Of Ancient India Revisited, A Vedic-Puranic View By Omesh K. Chopra

The Vedic-Puranic literature, as well as archaeological, geological, historical, linguistic, and literary accounts, have been reviewed to establish the various cultures that evolved in ancient India from about 3500 BCE to the Mahabharata War (1450 BCE). The book describes various misconceptions, e.g., the myth about an Aryan invasion. The following markers are used to establish the dates and geographical locations of various cultures: (i) The rise in sea levels due to the melting of land-based snow after the last Ice Age. (ii) Migration of the Dravidian people from the lost continent of Kumari Kandam that submerged under the Indian Ocean. (iii) The dates for the start of farming, use of kiln-baked bricks, domestication of horses, and metalworking in the Indian subcontinent. (iv) The dates when Sarasvati River dried up and the Mahabharata War occurred. The book notes that asva-containing or rath-containing names could not have existed before horses were domesticated or chariots were in use. The book also notes that Mathura Krsna is different from Dwarka Krsna; the two are separated by more than 1000 years. During Mathura Krsna’s time, conflicts were settled by hand-to-hand combat or with the use of a mace. In contrast, during Dwarka Krsna’s time, metal arms were used.
Dr. Omesh Chopra retired in 2016 from Argonne National Laboratory as a Senior Scientist after 42 years of service. He is now living in San Mateo, California. Omesh completed his graduation from Allahabad University, Birla Engineering College, Pilani, Indian Institute of Science, Bangalore, and the University of Waterloo, Canada. Dr. Chopra has published more than 150 topical reports and technical articles in International Journals. However, his life-long desire was to write about the true history of ancient India and not a colonial version of history. This book is the product of 40 years of research and many weekends at the University of Chicago library.

"Essential Irrationality" By M. A. ALAM

Irrationalities in our behaviours have been observed to be essential aspects of our nature. Most of the irrationalities have their origin in the adaptive strategies developed by millions of years of evolution to cope with the environmental harsh conditions of our ancient past. Consequently, we developed quick response systems to meet successfully the challenges of our ancestral environment. They were essential for our survival, but a few have now become redundant in the modern conditions, and are looked down as ridiculous biases. Some irrationalities have actually been found to be essential and beneficial for the well being and growth of our species. During the last few thousand years of our development, we additionally acquired a large number of belief systems, superstitions and faiths. Some of these beliefs are not quite rational and reasonable. They mould our personality by affecting our opinions, decisions, actions and behaviours. We are what we believe. When you hold beliefs without ascertaining their validity, you start losing your ability to doubt and question your beliefs. Fortunately, along with these developments we also created a reservoir of verifiable knowledge by using rational methods during the last few hundred years of our existence. We have a responsibility to familiarise ourselves with these techniques to avoid pitfalls of assuming all beliefs to be true. This book discusses how these irrationalities affect our lives, and how to cope with them.

Wing Commander M. A. Alam is a retired Indian Air Force officer. He holds the degrees of M.A., M.Ed., and PhD While in service, he served on instructional and administrative duties. We live in exciting times. It is the first time in the history of humanity when a new intelligence exists - not in the brains of varied species, but in our own pockets.
