Pages from the Diary of Small Town by Pragya Girl

About the book

Despite numerous advancements and achievements across the world, the issue of
women rights, equality, and safety continue to remain an unsolved issue. While
women status varies widely across the globe, one common thread (among many
others) that links women together is the issue of sexual abuse. This is a reality that
exists in almost every nation, whether developed, developing, or underdeveloped. It
also transcends religious boundaries. The other startling reality is that most women
do not report sexual abuse due to various reasons and society at large tends to also
pass judgments on women who speak up. The issue of sexual abuse is more
complicated in our Indian society due largely due to the stigma attached to
discussing sexual topics with our children or with other family members. Most often,
the perpetrators of sexual abuse are either part of the extended family, friends, or
acquaintances. This book aims to tackle these issues directly by sharing the author
personal experiences and showcases the grit shown by her in overcoming trauma.

India Post has reviewed the book.

Q/A with Arya Karwa

Q1. What inspired you to write this book?

Ans: In hindsight, my inspiration for writing this book was kind of naive and simplistic. I really love reading books, especially of the mystery-thriller genre, and one day, I just thought, 'If I can read so many books, then I can surely write one myself.' It was a spur-of-the-moment decision, but I'm really glad that I took it and stayed committed to it.

Q2. What do you hope your readers take away from this book?

Ans: I just want the readers to have fun reading the book, relating with the characters, following the plot and trying to predict what will happen next. But if I had to choose one takeaway for the readers, it would be realizing the personal implications of the decisions that William takes in the book. Being a spy and conducting top-secret missions is always associated with a level of glamour and allure (which is absolutely fine), but I think Blackout gives a more realistic indication of the mental, psychological and moral toll it can take on someone, especially an impressionable teenager like William.

Q3. What are some magic ingredients of a good plot?

Ans:

1. Regardless of whatever genre you are writing, you need to make sure that your story is not predictable and avoids clichés. A predictable storyline doesn’t engage the reader and diminishes your power as a storyteller. Don’t be afraid to use unconventional twists and it might be a good idea to ask for feedback.

2. Craft each of your characters carefully and differently. If every character in your novel has the same likable personality, there is little potential for conflict to arise. It’s good to include some diversity and nudge the reader towards being attached to some characters more than others.

3. Let the readers fill in the gaps for small events in the novel. Excessively descriptive details will frustrate the reader and leave them with an overall bad impression of the book. Always be concise.

Q4. What advice would you give to first time writers?

Ans: Firstly, choose a genre which you really enjoy reading. This will improve your writing, make you more committed to the process and also transmit your excitement to the reader. Secondly, don’t waste too much time on editing chapters and sections of the book if the book hasn’t been finished yet. Your writing is definitely going to evolve along the way. After you have finished writing the book, do your own editing before sending it to the editor. Finally, don’t ever force your writing. Let it flow naturally because if you start to force it, you will experience writer’s block more often and have constant second thoughts.

Q5. When you’re not writing, what do you like to do?

Ans: I love playing football (Man Utd fan), playing videogames, binge-watching TV shows and spending time with my golden retriever, Cooper. I also play the piano.

Euthanasia - A Doctrine of Death by Sourav Banerjee and Shreya Sengupta

About the book

Assisted Suicide is extremely controversial no matter from which perspective you look at it. It is illegal in most countries and that is why the law is given high priority in all chapters. A whole chapter is dedicated to its legal perspective alone. This book not only views it legally but all dimensions – economic, moral, philosophical and biological; are vividly explained. Dear readers can easily engross themselves in whichever genre they are interested in. But frankly speaking, no matter which dimension we took up; it was categorically proved with explicit logic that active euthanasia is not good for society. You can read for yourselves and find that you will also be convinced from all angles. A fantastic scope of research is also proposed that combines meta-physics with the latest biotech advances. If anyone can pursue that; it can become a groundbreaking finding for the entire humanity. All are welcome in this journey called ‘Doctrine of Death’.

THE SERMONIC VERSES by Narayan Prasad Samal

About the book

The Sermonic Verses is a volume of 100 sonnets in English, and has four thematic sections, i.e. Life, Living, Love and Death. The poet has depicted each theme with exotic lucidity, fine imagery and tickling fluidity in his attempts to answer the
endless enquiries of human mind, such as, Is life meaningless?, Is pain integral to life?, Is love always physical?, Is death really end of life?, Are we really different rom animals?, etc. The poet has personalized the English sonnet form with characteristic placement of Volta differently in different sonnets, which will give the readers the thrills of emotive twists.

The poet has wisely incorporated the love poems, first, as a necessary complement to the other sonnets and, second, to serve the readers a romantic delicacy, through the sermonic solemnity of the sonneted statements of the volume. The readers are no doubt expected to have some vital takes from the book.

Snippets - Some Stories Short by JASDEEP SINGH

About the book

“Snippets- some stories short” is a captivating jumble of simple real-like incidents that often escape our attention. The author has delicately drawn out such instances and fictionalized them with a fluidity that keeps the reader absorbed and instinctively flipping pages from one story to the other. Each story has a different hue, flavor and context wherein those interested in variety would find engrossing variegated mix wrapped in one cover. Yet the underlying theme is constant and about human sensibilities, frailty, subtle emotions, common fears, superstitions, faith, flaws and fragility. One may get confronted with commonplace happenings that would otherwise appear innocuous but could be speaking of embedded hierarchies, prejudices and stereotypes that we often take for granted. Then, certain unbelieving instances could catch one unawares that would revive your faith in some supreme power beyond. It makes us understand how experiences mould us in time. Simultaneously, making us realize how everything at the macro level merges into oneness of being - be it be different races of mankind, different religions and castes in India, different colours of a rainbow and so on; all artificial and mortal differences eventually even out.

The language used encapsulates the essence of the moment engaging the reader in flow of its simplicity and content. This short story collection specially suits fiction lovers with busy schedules and younger multitasking generation with constricting attention span. A happy reading and a tête-à-tête with latent realities of life.
