Mula Gabharu: A story of Extreme Valour and Patriotism

The novel is based on an Assamese legend, Princess Mula Gabharu, the younger sister of the
Greatest Ahom King, Swargadeo Suhungmung Dihinigia Raja, who became a martyr while
defending border against the fifth attempt (out of 17 unsuccessful attempts in 158 years from
1527 to 1685) by the Mighty Mughals to subjugate Assam in 1533-34. She took a decision to
face the invading army after her husband Frasengmung Borgohain became a martyr fighting with
the same invaders. Her participation galvanized the Assamese Army to defeat the Mughals and
the leader of the invaders, Turbak Khan was killed by her stepbrother, Konseng Borpatra
Gohain. Her son, Ton Kham also took part in this battle. The novel also describes the heroics of
Sati Sadhani, the last Chutiya Queen and Kachari Prince, Detcha who were defeated by
Frasengmung Borgohain in two separate battles. The novel also refers about Rani Gaidinlu while
legacy of Mula has been shared with the readers.

About the author

The author, Hiranya Borah hails from Chatia, a backward village of erstwhile Darrang District of
Assam. His parents were school teachers and his early schooling upto matriculation was in his
parental village. He passed out from Cotton College, as a science graduate in 1981. During his
college days, he was the editor of the college magazine. He took his master degree and M.Phil
degree from Delhi University in 1983 and 1984 respectively. At present he is a senior officer of
Government of India and posted at New Delhi. In the last few years he has published more than
189 ebooks and has published 11 English books and two Assamese books in print. He prefers to
write in simple English which can be understood by one and all. Apart from writing books, he is

Vedanta talks about Tattva (realities), Hita (means) and Purusartha (the goal). In Visistadvaita tattva is further classified as three realities cit (the sentient) acit (the insentient) and isvara the controller of the other two. It is the relationship between these three which is so significant, and that is what is discussed by all acaryas. The cit, when it is associated with acit in the form of sarira, is able to transact with the grace of Isvara to attain moksa the goal, the purusartha. Cit like Isvara is unperishable and it survives even after the body is dead. It enters another body based on the karma-phala that had fructified. This study is a comparison of the above concept as described by two great Vaisnava acarvas namely Pillai Lokacarya and Svami Desika.


About the Author

A. Padmavathi, though was born in southern Tamil Nadu, lived all the time in Chennai, the erstwhile Madras. Her earlier education was in Christian missionary schools and college. She qualified herself with Bachelor in Science and Bachelor in Education before marriage. After bearing two sons and after they settled down, she along with her husband went back to school to do their Master’s degree in Vaisnavism from the University of Madras. She completed her M.Phil., under Prof S. Padmanabhan was later awarded a Ph. Girls College, Dhar and later continued as Principal in Govt. Post Graduate level College, Dhar till the year 2000. After her superannuation she continued her literary journey by writing in different magazines and newspapers. She had not only translated many stories written in foreign languages into Hindi but also written critical analysis in Hindi. She had penned six books in Hindi during her lifetime.

INDIA'S STRESSED ASSETS CONUNDRUM - SUGGESTED WAY-OUT by Prahalad Rao

 Dawn of Twenty First Century sighted the Stressed Assets {NPAs}, These banks and
financial institutions came under tremendous pressure for financing the projects in
the various sectors that perforce became necessary with the Economic Reforms in
1991 that enabled the private participation in a wider sense in the economic
development process followed by the Financial Sector Reforms 1991-1992 onwards
that blurred the functional lines hitherto existed between the commercial banks and
the DFIs.
Because of rising Non-Performance Assets (NPAs) of the major private participants
from the later part of the first decade of the new century, the banks and financial
institutions were not able to maintain their level of profitability in their operations
which further constrained due to enforcement of Prudential Norms by the RBI. The
NPAs reached peak sometime in 2006-07 that led to increasing uneasiness in the
Financial Sector.
This entailed amendment of the Banking Regulations Act, 1949.Then came IBC
which opened up a newer route to escape from honouring the NPAs resulting in write
off of large public money. This is going on; the catastrophic outcome of which is
telling upon the economic slowdown. The Prudential Norms Circular of 12 February,
2018 issued by the RBI was struck down by the Supreme Court.
The PSBs having been working under invisible political interventions from the time
they were nationalized way back in 1969 aided more in building up the NPAs. The
PSBs having found themselves in a fixed situation due either because of policy or
political considerations were unable to act according to the loan covenants for
recovery of NPAs. IBC route had not been beneficial to the PSBs who ultimately had
no option but to make provision for Bad Debts/Doubtful Debts and write them off in
their books of accounts.This is the Work-in-Progress {WIP}
